An absolutely superb signed & dated 1861 oil on canvas by Alexander Burr R.S.A. the Scottish genre and history painter. This work is titled playmates and shows children and their mother having fun in a cottage interior. The children are trying to tempt a cat with a ball of string whilst the mother rests and nurses her youngest. The detail in the work is extraordinary. We were originally going to price this fine painting @ 8,000ukp but we managed to do a deal on a few items that allowed us to offer this painting for 6500ukp.

Born 1835 or 1837, in Manchester; died 1899.

Painter, watercolourist. History painting, genre scenes.

Alexander Burr studied at the Trustees’ Academy in Edinburgh. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1856. He went to London with his brother John in around 1861 where he exhibited at the Royal Academy.
