Country Homes Antiques Scotland est; 1985
A selection of French antiques, including furniture, pairs of fine gilt Fauteuils etc. Sevres and other Paris Porcelain, Clocks, and many French curiosity items.
Why French antiques? 19th cent French porcelain has the quality of the finest in the World. With names like Sevres commanding huge sums at auction. Flamboyant gilt and heavily carved chairs. Using Indigenous timbers, fruit woods and beech, as apposed to using up the already dwindelling Brazilian hardwoods. The French used more vaneers with woods such as Kingwood, unique to a very small area of Brazil, (part of the Maple family of trees) other woods from Africa, satinwood, ebony etc. Finely made furniture especially in the mid 19th century where our furniture had become bulky and heavily during our Victorian times.
It wasn’t IKEA who invented flat pack furniture though, the French made flat pack furniture in the 19th century, unlike our Victorians who chose to separate the carcass into sections.
