Robert Adam styled American Cherry Communion Table

By Andrew Christie Cabinet and Chairmakers

A Robert Adam styled American Cherry Communion Table. This table  American cherrywood has a very interesting story, history. Andrew was commissioned by the Scottish Royal Architects (Hurd Roland) to make this table for the Edinburgh St Andrews Church Queen st Edinburgh. The church was built in circa late 1790s. The interior was designed by the renowned designer of the late 18th century, early 19th century Robert Adam.

Andrews task was to incorporate some of Robert Adams designed cornicing into a communion table for the church along with unique communion chairs to match. With a blank piece of paper he came up with this table design. All well and good and that concludes part 1 of this tables story. Initially commissioned circa; 1992 and incorporated into the church, along with the unique matching communion chairs also made of American cherrywood.

Episode 2  26 years later. On one of Andrews UK antiques hunts, sitting in an antiques shop in northern England low and behold, the very table Andrew made all those years ago. Sitting there with a price ticket on it. Andrew taken back a but im sure, said nothing at first and just enquired if the dealer knew what wood it was made of, and if he knew where it came from. he didn’t know, apparently purchased in a local auction. At this point Andrew told him it was made 26years ago, made of American cherrywood, and that he himself had actually made the table and now happy to purchase it back.

How could he walk away from this, as an antiques dealer anyway and lover of fine furniture. A chance to enjoy it and re live the experience, remembering all the challenges he over came in the making of this fine table. Furthermore be able to sell it yet again, over a quarter of a century later was to irresistible to him. He had often said, and wondered if he would ever come across a piece made in his workshops one day, as many of the pieces he made to train his apprentices with went to London Auction Houses, little more can be said about this as he just smiles when asked.

Ready for episode 111 now, Ready now to be with a new lover of fine furniture, and now with the pedigree and province to grace it on it journey through the generations. Its a very small World indeed !

THIS TABLE IS FOR SALE, and at a fraction of the original cost to build and considerably less than its worth. Andrew just wanted to see it again before he sends on a new journey, and now with historic provenance. History provided. He will even stamp the table with his name. Something he never did with any of his creations.  It was many years before he realised the relevance of the work he and his aprentices did, maintaining the skills of old. Sadly now lacking today. Alas we have found some old fotos and a few actual pieces he made through his time as a fine cabinet and chairmaker. And now also this fine table.  This table seats six very comfortably. We are selling this now at a fraction of its true worth.
